North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick will have his sons on the Tar Heels’ coaching staff this fall.

Steve Belichick will be the team’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, while Brian Belichick will coach defensive backs and safeties.

UNC general manager Michael Lombardi’s son, Matt, will coach the team’s quarterbacks.

UNC announced its coaching staff Monday, one day before the Tar Heels are set to begin spring practice under Belichick, who was hired in December. Belichick has never coached in college, but won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots.

Michael Lombardi has often referred to the Tar Heels as the “33rd NFL team,” and many of the coaches have NFL ties.

Inside linebackers coach Jamie Collins played for Belichick with the Patriots. Running backs coach Natrone Means, a former UNC player, also played in the NFL. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer has coached in the NFL for more than two decades.

Offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, the lone coaching holdover from Mack Brown’s staff, was a head coach in the NFL. Means was an offensive analyst under Brown last season.

Steve Belichick was the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington in 2024. Brian Belichick coached with the Patriots for nine seasons, including as safeties coach from 2020 to 2024.

Matt Lombardi spent 2024 as an offensive assistant at Oregon. He was an assistant wide receivers coach with the Oakland Raiders and an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers previously.

North Carolina gave Belichick a $10-million salary pool for his assistant coaches, according to his term sheet. The contract terms for the assistant coaches have not been released.

The Tar Heels open their 2025 season against TCU on Labor Day night (Sept. 1).
