Asheville’s Michael Haskin ends senior season with 4A cross country title; Marvin Ridge repeats as team champion
Asheville senior Michael Haskin will go out with a state championship.
After winning the 4A West regional championship last week, Haskin won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state title by less than 1.5 seconds on Saturday at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.
Haskin crossed the finish line with a time of 15:21.71, narrowly beating Riverside’s Philip Blum, who finished second with a time of 15:23.19.
Haskin is the third boys cross country state champion in Asheville school history. The last champion was in 2008 when John Harwell won the 3A title at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.
Joining Blum near the top of the leaderboard is Riverside teammate Connor Tyrrell, who placed third with a time of 15:31.30. Tyrrell beat Marvin Ridge’s David Rivlin by just 0.44 seconds. Rivlin’s fourth place finish featured a time of 15:31.74.
R.J. Reynolds’ Cedar Nichols-Barnhart finished fifth in the individual standings with a time of 15:33.10.
Marvin Ridge repeated as the 4A boys cross country state champion with a team score of 68 points. David Rivlin’s fourth place finish led the Mavericks, but David Firestone also finished in the top ten with a time of 15:44.22. Michael Rivlin placed 13th with a time of 15:49.84.
The repeat state championship marks the second state title all-time for the Marvin Ridge boys cross country team.
Broughton finished second in the team standings, led by a 14th place finish by Sam Wooten, who posted a time of 15:51.10. The Capitals had a team score of 96 points.
Hoggard (160), Holly Springs (167), and Riverside (228) completed the top five in the team standings.
