On Thursday night, North Carolina defeated No. 25 Syracuse 75-51, ending the Orange’s eight-game winning streak. Alyssa Ustby made history for the team by achieving its first ever triple-double, while Maria Gakdeng scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The game took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Ustby had a successful 7 out of 11 shots and ended the game with 16 points, a personal best of 16 rebounds, a career-high of 10 assists, and two steals. Lexi Donarski also contributed 14 points, with four of them coming from 3-pointers, for North Carolina (10-4, 1-0 ACC). The team has now secured four consecutive wins.
Syracuse (11-2, 1-1) suffered their first defeat since their 83-81 loss to then-No. 20 Maryland on November 19th.
In the third quarter, Donarski earned eight points and Utsby, Gakdeng, and Deja Kelly contributed five points each. This helped the Tar Heels dominate Syracuse with a score of 25-6. They ended the quarter with a strong 17-2 run, resulting in a commanding 57-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Dyaisha Fair was the top scorer for the Orange with 17 points, but she only made 7 out of 22 shots from the field and 3 out of 12 from 3-point range. First-year player Alyssa Latham contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds, achieving her third consecutive double-double and fifth of the season.
Ustby began the game with a successful layup after only 34 seconds, and the Tar Heels maintained the lead throughout. In the first quarter, Gakdeng contributed nine points in a 12-4 run, giving UNC an eight-point advantage. Donarski also added to the lead with a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, making the score 24-14.

In their No. 25 ranked scoring offense, Syracuse shot 30% (21 out of 71) from the field, 20% (6 out of 30) from the 3-point line, and 70% (14 out of 20) from the free throw line during the game.
On Sunday, North Carolina will face off against No. 16 Notre Dame while Syracuse will host Boston College.
