Multiple reports state that Nick Saban, the strict coach responsible for leading Alabama to six national championships in 17 seasons and restoring the team’s status as a top contender, is retiring after winning a total of seven national titles.

At 72 years old, Saban revitalized the Crimson Tide, a program that was previously dominated by Paul “Bear” Bryant, and brought them back to the pinnacle of college football since assuming leadership in 2007. Reports first surfaced on Wednesday, initially by ESPN and then by other sources, that he has decided to step down.

Saban led the Crimson Tide from a shaky start this season to a Southeastern Conference championship and back into the College Football Playoff before falling to Michigan in a semifinal game at the Rose Bowl.

Saban coached Alabama to nine Southeastern Conference titles and achieved his initial national championship with a perfect 14-0 season in 2009. Additional titles were claimed in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. While always a top contender, Alabama had not secured the title since then.

Saban is known for his intense expression and passionate attitude on the sidelines, as well as his success in winning. He holds the record for the most national championships among all major college coaches.

After a brief two-year stint in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, he returned to college football to revitalize one of its most renowned programs. This team had not won a national championship in 15 years. Saban has an impressive record of 297 wins, 71 losses, and 1 tie as a college head coach. He has held positions at Toledo, Michigan State, and LSU, where he also achieved a national title. However, it was during his time at Alabama where he solidified his reputation as one of the greatest coaches in college football.

His most recent group faced numerous challenges at the start, such as a defeat against Texas, but bounced back due to the rise of quarterback Jalen Milroe and pulled off an upset against previously top-ranked Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Saban did not appear to be a coach ready to resign from his position anytime soon after the game. However, it was still a satisfying outcome, even without winning the title.

He stated that this season for Alabama football has been truly remarkable, considering the team’s journey, achievements, and success in winning the SEC Championship. He expressed great pride in this team.

“I regret not being able to do more as a coach to support their success and completion. At this point, the only option is to reflect and learn from the lessons that come with failure.”
