A potential scenario for NCHSAA realignment with 32 schools divided into either 1A or 8A divisions.

On Monday, the N.C. High School Athletic Association distributed a significant survey to member schools, soliciting their input on potential realignment ideas.

Some of the suggestions in the survey examined how the future realignment would appear if one of the eight classifications was limited to 32 schools and the remaining seven were divided evenly. The NCHSAA plans to move towards an eight classification system regardless. These ideas of a “Big 32” and “Small 32” are just options on top of the existing proposal to evenly divide schools across eight classifications.

As with the 4A and 1A classifications today, there would be a significant disparity in the attendance numbers between the smallest school and largest school in the 1A and 8A classifications. The idea here is that a 32-school 1A or a 32-school 8A would create a more even playing field.

Currently, there is a gap of 786 students in Average Daily Membership (ADM) between the largest and smallest 1A schools. In 4A, this gap is even greater at 2,363 students. According to the NCHSAA, if a “Small 32” 1A is implemented in the next realignment, the difference between the top and bottom schools would be reduced to 237 students. However, if a “Big 32” 8A is implemented, the gap would increase to 1,532 students.

In the initial section of this analysis, we demonstrate what a classification of 32 schools in the 1A or 8A division would appear to be if the current 436 member schools were realigned today.

Following that, there is a detailed analysis of the potential outcomes for both of these scenarios by 2025. With the projected addition of five new schools, bringing the total number of member schools to 441, this example provides a more realistic depiction of what will occur during realignment.

What 32 Schools in 8A Would Look Like Today

The NCHSAA survey included a table displaying the number of schools in each of the eight classifications. The total number of schools was 436, with 32 in 8A and an equal distribution in the remaining seven classes. This resulted in 57 schools in 1A, 58 in 2A, 58 in 3A, 58 in 4A, 58 in 5A, 58 in 6A, 57 in 7A, and 32 in 8A.

We have assigned those figures to the appropriate schools based on the Average Daily Membership numbers for 2023-24.

These schools include Ballantyne Ridge in Charlotte, Phoenix Academy (a charter school), Summit Charter in Cashiers, Jackson Day School (another charter school) in Charlotte, and American Leadership Academy (a charter school) in Clayton.

This is an example of how realignment may appear with a limit of 32 schools in 8A.

In order to complete this activity, we have assigned schools to different categories: 7A, 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A.
