(2) Cardinal Gibbons shuts out reigning 4A East champ (3) Hoggard in fourth round
After winning the 4A eastern regional championship last season, Hoggard’s season came to an end in the fourth round this fall.
(2) Cardinal Gibbons defeated (3) Hoggard 38-0 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs on Friday night in Raleigh.
The Crusaders’ defense was impressive throughout the night, and the offense took advantage.
Cardinal Gibbons scored twice in the first quarter — a one-yard run by Aaron Anderson and an eight-yard run by Kendall Scotton — giving the Crusaders a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Evan Windley added a 45-yard field goal for Cardinal Gibbons in the second quarter, extending the lead to 17-0 at halftime. The field goal set a school record for field goal distance.
Cardinal Gibbons pulled away in the third quarter. Gannon Jones scored on a one-yard keeper to push the lead to 24-0, then Jones scored through the air, connecting with Sam Dodd for a 43-yard touchdown. The lead was 31-0 for the Crusaders after three quarters.
The Crusaders added one last touchdown in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 38-0 when Noah Terry broke a touchdown run.
Cardinal Gibbons will host (5) Rolesville in the 4A eastern regional championship game next week.
