Allianz Arena will be the centre of attention when Romania and Netherlands square off against each other in the last 16 of the 2024 European Championship finals. The Tricolorii set up a meeting with Netherlands thanks to a 1-1 draw with Slovakia, but they will have a mountain to climb in Tuesday’s showdown. There are no fresh injury worries in Edward Iordanescu’s team, but Nicusor Bancu serves a one-game ban.

The Oranje, meanwhile, booked their place in the knockout stages despite suffering a 3-2 loss to Austria in their last group game. Ronald Koeman is widely expected to make changes to the starting XI, with both Xabi Simons and Jeremie Frimpong pushing for recalls. PSV midfielder Joey Veerman, who lost possession 16 times against Austria, should drop to the bench, as well as Donyell Malen, who scored an own-goal. Anyhow, away win should be considered as Ronald Koeman has a number of high-profile players to choose from.

Memphis Depay is a Dutch winger who started his professional career at PSV Eindhoven. During the 2014/2015 Eredivisie campaign the pacey footballer was on Manchester United’s radar and on June 12, 2015 the Premier League club confirmed the signing of the Dutchman. Many people expected that he would impress in the 2015/2016 Premier League season, but the former PSV ace played below expectations for the Red Devils, scoring only two goals (one assist) during the season.

After playing only for league games for Man Utd in the 2016/2017 season, Memphis Depay was sold to Olympique Lyon on January 20, 2017. Depay signed a four-and-a-half year deal with les Gones for a fee of around £16 million. The Dutch winger was producing fine performances for Lyon in the 2016/2017 season; he scored five goals for the club, while providing eight assists for his teammates.

Memphis Depay made his senior debut for Netherlands on October 15, 2013 in a 2-0 win over Turkey. Depay did well to win the 2011 European Championship with Netherlands U17 team.

Romania were one of just four European sides to take part at the first ever World Cup in 1930, and the team have since achieved respectable results on the international stage, albeit failing to challenge for major trophies.

Led by arguably their best ever footballer Gheorghe Hagi, the Tricolorii narrowly missed out on the semi-finals at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, losing to Sweden on penalties. Romania made a total of seven appearances at the World Cup finals, while qualifying for five European Championship tournaments. The Tricolorii went the farthest in 2000, when they were eliminated by Italy in the quarter-finals.

Tied at the top of the goalscoring charts, Gheorghe Hagi and Adrian Mutu are the only two Romanian footballers to have gained worldwide recognition, but Dorinel Munteanu, Dan Petrescu, Gheorghe Popescu and Viorel Moldovan are also worth mention. Romania play their home games at the Arena National in Bucarest.
