In 1874, a team known as Christ Church Football Club was established, which later became known as Bolton Wanderers. They currently compete in the Championship and their home games are played at Macron Stadium, which was built in 1997.

The Bolton Wanderers have won the FA Cup four times (in 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1958), but have not yet won the Premier League title. In the 2003/2004 Premier League season, the Trotters had impressive performances and finished in eighth place, which is considered their best result in the English top division.

Bolton’s performance in the 2007/2008 season was commendable as they successfully advanced to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup. They were able to eliminate Atletico Madrid in a two-legged tie, but ultimately faced a tough challenge from Sporting Lisbon.

Jay-Jay Okocha, a Nigerian athlete, is well-known for his time playing for Bolton where he successfully scored 14 goals in 124 league games. Bury is recognized as the team’s biggest competitors.
