Vitoria Guimaraes have always been in the shadow of famous Portuguese sides Porto, Benfica and Sporting, but over the years they have established themselves as a top-table side in the Primeira Liga. Os Vimaranenses did well to win Taca de Portugal in the 2012/2013 season, wi the team beating Benfica in the final of the domestic cup.

In the 2016/2017 Primeira Liga season, Vitoria Guimaraes came in fourth place and qualified for the Europa League qualifiers. They will be competing against Salzburg, Konyaspor, and Olympic Marseille in Group I, and are considered the weaker team in their group. Their home stadium, Estadio D. Alfonso Henriques, has a capacity of 30,000 spectators and will host their matches.

The team from Guimaraes wears white shirts and shorts during their home games, but switch to black when playing away. Their biggest rivals are Braga, who also represent the Minho Province and the two teams compete in a local derby.
