Expect an electrifying atmosphere at Volksparkstadion when France and Portugal square off against each other in the EURO 2024 quarter-finals. France survived Belgium thanks to Jan Vertonghen’s late own-goal, but it has to be noted that they dominated the game. Midfielder Adrien Rabiot serves a one-game ban, with Real Madrid ace Eduardo Camavinga likely to step up. PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani could sneak into the starting XI following his fine performance against the Red Devils.

A Selecao, on the other hand, set up a meeting with les Tricolores by beating Slovenia on penalties. As Cristiano Ronaldo is obviously on the twilight of his career, we are tempted to put our money on the star-studded Didier Deschamps’ troops. Even though there are no fresh injury worries in Roberto Martinez’s team, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota should be recalled to the starting XI after going on a fine solo run that ended in a penalty against Slovenia.

Kylian Mbappe is a French footballer who plays for Paris Saint-Germain as a forward. The French rising star began his youth career at AS Bondy and in 2013 he moved to AS Monaco. After making 12 appearances for Monaco B, Kylian Mbappe made his debut for the senior team in 2015. Mbappe quickly established himself as a regular goalscorer, with the teenager finding the net 15 times in 29 appearances in the Ligue 1 in the 2016/2017 season.

In 2017 he moved to fellow French club PSG on loan, with the option of making the deal permanent. Kylian Mbappe scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for les Parisiens in the 2017/2018 and it has to be noted that Unai Emery’s troops eventually won the national championship.

Speaking of his international career, Mbappe played an important role for France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, with the pacey rising star scoring a brace in a thrilling 4-3 win over Argentina in the last 16 of the showpiece tournament. The PSG attacker was born in Paris on December 20, 1998.

Portugal started competing at the biggest stage in the 1930’s, but they had to wait for almost seventy years to establish themselves as a top side. The third place finish at the 1966 World Cup was a one-off result as the Selecao needed another 40 years to get past the group stage, reaching the semi-finals at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Portugal enjoyed more success on the continent, finishing third at the 1984, 2000 and 2012 European Championships, while losing in the final to Greece at the Euro 2004 that was held on home soil. Despite being able to count on one of world’s best ever footballers Cristiano Ronaldo, the Selecao have yet to lift a major trophy and they will not have too many opportunities to do so before the Real Madrid superstar retires.

Eusebio remains the most famous footballer to have played for Portugal, while Luis Figo, Simao Sabrosa, Pedro Pauleta, Rui Costa and Nani are also worth mention. The Selecao currently boast an impressive pool of world-class talent and it should not be long before they end the trophy drought.
