The leading health representative for the country plans to make a trip to Alabama following the decision on IVF.
The White House is dispatching the country’s leading healthcare authority to Alabama on Tuesday to engage in conversations with patients and medical professionals regarding the contentious court decision that disrupted in vitro fertilization procedures in the region.
The decision made by the Alabama Supreme Court, which is currently dominated by Republicans, has surprisingly brought the topic of IVF to the forefront of the presidential campaign discussions, just in time for the crucial Super Tuesday voting on March 5.
Xavier Becerra, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, is visiting shortly after ex-President Donald Trump promised to safeguard availability of fertility treatment.
President Joe Biden and his supporters have rapidly taken advantage of the recent decision, which considers frozen embryos as minors under state law and poses a potential threat to fertility treatment in the state. They view it as proof that Republicans have pushed the limits in limiting reproductive health services. There are also Republicans who express concern about the ruling.
Biden issued a statement condemning the ruling as “outrageous.” Vice President Kamala Harris characterized the decision as ironic, as it may hinder families’ ability to conceive.
Multiple medical facilities have temporarily halted in vitro fertilization procedures following the recent ruling by the court. Certain legislators in the region claim they are urgently searching for a solution.
Trump, who appointed anti-abortion judges to the U.S. Supreme Court and in federal judgeships around the country, came out strongly against the ruling on Friday saying on his own social media platform, “We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder!”
Becerra will be meeting with medical professionals and individuals who have been affected by the state court’s decision during his trip to Alabama.
In a recent social media post, Becerra expressed his reaction to the ruling in Alabama, stating that it will bring painful repercussions for women and their families.
