The governor of California has initiated advertising campaigns in response to laws restricting travel for abortions.

California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed a new advertising initiative on Sunday aimed at challenging efforts by Republican-led states to restrict access to out-of-state abortions and other reproductive healthcare services.

On Monday, a multi-state advertising campaign and online petition will be launched to bring attention to a proposed measure in Tennessee. The bill, known as the “abortion trafficking” bill, is being sponsored by Republican state lawmakers and would make it a felony for an adult to recruit, harbor, or transport a minor for an abortion without parental consent.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, Newsom stated that they are considering implementing restrictions similar to a law already passed in Idaho in both Oklahoma and Mississippi.

“The circumstances are even more harmful than they may seem,” Newsom stated. “These individuals are not only limiting the rights and self-determination of young women to have a child, but they are also controlling their future by prohibiting them from traveling.”

Advocates of the Tennessee law argue that it has the potential to make it a crime to not only transport a minor for an abortion, but also to share information about abortion services in the area or to inform others about states with more lenient abortion laws.

Republican lawmaker Jason Zachary, who is one of the sponsors of the bill, has described it as a “bill protecting parental rights.”

Since the year 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the decision of Roe v. Wade, those against abortion have been advocating for states to prohibit the procedure and devise methods to prevent pregnant women and girls from traveling to other states to receive it.

The state of Idaho has passed a law referred to as the “abortion trafficking” law. This unique law prohibits obtaining abortion pills for a minor without parental knowledge and consent, as well as assisting a minor in leaving the state for an abortion.

Newsom, a Democrat widely seen as a future presidential candidate, said his RightToTravel.org effort will be paid for by a national political action committee he launched last spring with $10 million from his state campaign funds. The effort, dubbed, the “Campaign for Democracy,” is designed to boost Joe Biden and other Democrats and the conservative Republican agenda, he said.

Democratic and liberal organizations have relied on the issue of abortion rights to energize voters for the upcoming presidential election and battle for control of Congress.

According to their beliefs, advocating for abortion rights can be a successful stance as the discussion expands to encompass pressing issues such as miscarriage treatment, access to medication, emergency care, and in vitro fertilization procedures. The recent decision made by the Alabama Supreme Court has put potential access to IVF at risk.
