According to the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, approximately 3 million children have lost their healthcare coverage due to issues with paperwork, long wait times at call centers, and difficulties with the application process. In August, HHS notified all states that they may be in violation of federal regulations.
In September, CMS reported that 500,000 individuals, including children, had their coverage mistakenly terminated due to errors made by the states. These states were instructed to temporarily stop removing individuals from coverage and instead reinstate those who were affected, or they could potentially lose federal funding.
