The Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary will be a training site for the 2024 U.S. Olympic swim team

The Olympic journey to Paris has a stop in the Triangle.

Team USA’s swim practice got underway on Monday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, where 46 American swimmers, along with their coaching staff, will spend the next week getting ready for the Olympic games.

The site was specially chosen due to its incredible training facility, hotels, easy transportation, and direct flights to Paris.

At the Tokyo Olympics games in 2021, Cary native Claire Curzan, 16, took home the silver medal in the 4×100 women’s medley. Later, she would go on to set an American record in the 50-meter backstroke.

Before she was an Olympian, Curzan trained at this local Cary pool. Now that pool has been chosen to train future Olympians.

Located behind the old Cary Towne Center at 275 Convention Drive, the training site for the 2024 summer Olympics will come alive this week.

TAC has been working with USA Swimming for the past year. Leaders said they are honored for this opportunity for their club.

The TAC Titans sent 14 swimmers to the 2021 U.S. Olympics Trials, more than any other club in the country. The club put two on the Olympic Team, Curzan and Ashley Twichell.

TAC executive director Derek Wall said, “We feel like it’s a great opportunity for us to be supportive of USA Swimming, and to be supportive of these great athletes to try to get them what they need.”

The domestic training camps will take place between June 30 through July 10.

The summer Olympics will be held from July 26 through August 11 in Paris, France.
