Butler QB Zachary Lawrence commits to UMass

On Tuesday, Butler High School quarterback Zachary Lawrence closed his recruitment with a verbal commitment to the University of Massachusetts. He announced his decision to his social media accounts.

The Minutemen’s football team competes in the NCAA’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Since 2015, UMass has not competed in a conference. Starting with the 2025 season, the Minutemen will rejoin the Mid-American Conference.

Lawrence is listed at 6-foot-1, 195-pounds.

During his sophomore season on varsity, Lawrence completed 165 of 261 passing attempts for 2,557 yards, 32 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. As a junior, he completed 138 of 230 attempts for 1,892 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

His career stats are 303 completions, 491 attempts (61.7%) for 4,449 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions.

Butler posted a 10-3 overall record during Lawrence’s sophomore season. During Lawrence’s junior season, Butler finished 12-2 overall and won the Southwestern 4A Conference.

Over the course of his recruitment, Lawrence received offers from Boston College, James Madison, East Carolina, UNC-Charlotte, Minnesota, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, and UMass.

He is rated as a 3-star prospect and the No. 17 class of 2025 player in North Carolina by Rivals. The three other major recruiting services (On3, 247Sports, and ESPN) have not given Lawrence a star designation.
