The Carolina Hurricanes tabbed assistant general manager Eric Tulsky as the franchise’s new general manager Tuesday, replacing Don Wadell, who resigned after the end of the season.

Tulsky, who holds a doctorate in chemistry, spent the last four seasons as Carolina’s assistant general manager. He’s been with the organization for the last 10 year. Tulsky was named interim general manager on May 24 when Waddell resigned. He was later hired by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Tulsky takes over during a pivotal time for the Hurricanes, who have a number of key free agents from last year’s playoff team.

“Eric is ready for this opportunity,” Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon said in a statement. “He has a proven history of managing people and overseeing operations both outside of hockey and over the last decade with the Hurricanes. His dedication, work ethic and attention to detail make him the ideal candidate to become our next general manager.”

Tulsky joined the Hurricanes as a consultant in 2014 and became a hockey analyst a year later. He was named manager of hockey analytics in 2017 and vice president of hockey management and strategy in 2018. Tulsky has been assistant general manager since 2020, involved in all player personnel decisions and overseeing pro scouting.

“Everything we do here is collaborative, and Eric will work closely with Darren Yorke, Rod Brind’Amour and our leadership team to continue building a championship-caliber hockey club,” Dundon said.

Tulsky, from Philadelphia, earned a degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Cal. He worked at the Naval Research Laboratory and holds 27 U.S. patents from his work in using nanotechnology.

The Hurricanes have reached the postseason in six consecutive years, winning at least one series in each of them. Carolina lost to the New York Rangers in the second round of the NHL playoffs this season.

The team is bringing back Brind’Amour, but must make decisions on free agents on unrestricted free agents Jake Guentzel, a mid-season acquisition, and key defensemen Brady Skjei and Brett Pesce. Forwards Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas are restricted free agents.
