Former NC State player Scott Wood named head basketball coach at Broughton

The N.C. State basketball coaching tree continues to grow in Wake County.

On Tuesday afternoon, Broughton High School formally announced the hiring of Scott Wood as its head boys basketball coach. Wood takes over one of the state’s most decorated basketball programs after Clarence Coleman went 47-71 over the past five seasons.

Wood finished his career in Raleigh as the Wolfpack’s all-time leader with 334 made three-point baskets. He also held the school record for games started in a career with 136. Wood scored 1,467 career points for the Wolfpack, which at the time ranked 18th in school history.

As a junior, he set the ACC record for consecutive free throws made with 66 (2011-12), eclipsing the previous mark held by Duke’s J.J. Redick (54, 2003-04). At the time, his free throw streak was fourth longest in NCAA history.

During Wood’s four years in the NC State program, the Wolfpack won 83 games, including 48 during his final two seasons playing for head coach Mark Gottfried. NCSU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in those two Gottfried-led seasons.

His professional basketball career began with the Los Angeles Clippers’ summer league team and continued overseas with Spain, Turkey, France, and Montenegro. It also featured a stop in the NBA G-League with the Santa Cruz Warriors where he won the league’s 2017 three-point shooting contest.

The entirety of Wood’s college career was spent playing alongside Richard Howell who was named the head boys basketball coach at Green Hope High School in April.

Broughton went 11-15 a year ago and finished third in the Cap-7 Conference. The program has a rich history of producing professional basketball alumni, most notably Pete Maravich, Shavlik Randolph, Devonte Graham, and Jerome Robinson.

The Capitals were led last season by freshman Jordan Page who averaged 17.8 PPG while earning HighSchoolOT All-State merits and receiving an invitation to USA basketball national training camp.

Wood’s prior coaching experience has come at the grassroots level as the head of the SW15H Elite AAU program.
