Excitement is building for next week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

On Thursday, golf fans got a first look at the resort before the tournament starts next week.

“It’s only going to get more fun as the week goes on,” golf fan Nancy Bogan said. “You’ll see celebrities, and obviously, following the golfers.

Fan central is right in the middle of the Payne Stewart statue, which is situated in front of the Pinehurst No. 2 resort. Crews moved the statue statue for the tournament, which runs from June 13-16. Typically, the statue sits overlooking the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2.

On Thursday, golf fan James Noel took a picture of his children in front of the statue.

“It’s invaluable, Noel said. “That’s what I work hard for every day, to provide for him and her, and to be able to have these kinds of memories.”

This month will mark 25 years since Stewart hit a par putt on the 18th hole of Pinehurst No. 2 to win the 1999 U.S. Open. Months later, Stewart died in a plane crash.

Things to do at Pinehurst No. 2

The United States Golf Association [USGA] has put together an interactive experience that intends to grow the game while honoring its history. It’s the site of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

There is also a 35,000 square foot tent, which is open to anyone until Sunday. No ticket is necessary. Golf fans can catch a glimpse of the U.S. Open trophy.

“I did not appreciate the magnitude of what we’re seeing and how many people [are here],” Noel said. “We’re a week out, and you already got thousands of people here, it’s pretty magical.”
