What to know about Bret Story, the new head football coach at East Gaston
Earlier this offseason, East Gaston High School hired Bret Story to serve as its next head football coach. Story has taken over from JT Postell, who left to take the opening at Smoky Mountain High School, which is closer to his home.
Story has coached in both high school and college. He has experience coaching each position group.
Most recently, Story served as the offensive line coach at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg. He was there for the 2023 season only.
He is a graduate of Broome High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He attended three colleges and played sports at each: Spartanburg Methodist College and USC Upstate for baseball and Newberry College for football. He is a graduate of Newberry College. The multi-sport athlete singed a free agent deal with the Texas Rangers during his college journey.
Story’s football coaching story began at Newberry after he graduated in 2010. His first high school job came as the tight ends coach at May River High School in Bluffton, SC. That was five years ago.
In between his time at May River and Hickory Ridge, Story was the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Carson-Newman University, an NCAA Division II institution in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Carson-Newman plays in the South Atlantic Conference.
Story will employ a multiple gun offense at East Gaston. His plan is to run the ball to win and throw it for fun.
