The new Martin County High School will have a new boys varsity basketball coach this winter.

Martin County High is the soon-to-be-consolidated Riverside and South Creek High Schools. The new combined school will be an official entity at the turn of the school year. It will be the lone public high school in Martin County.

The school system shared the position’s opening to its social media accounts over the past couple of days.

Last year, Riverside and South Creek’s athletic teams competed together as Martin County in a move that preempted the full consolidation. With the combined daily membership, Martin was a 2A school N.C. High School Athletic Association, as opposed to the 1A classification that the schools were members of as individual.

Bobby Williams, who coached at Riverside High for 23 seasons, served as the program’s head coach. 2023-2024 was his 24th year. Martin finished with an 18-10 overall record and made it to the second round of the 2A playoffs.

Riverside was a regular winner under Williams. From 2010-2023, Riverside finished with a winning record 11 times and made the NCHSAA playoffs each season.

Williams posted the following message to his social media:

“Tigers, Knights & Martin Co nations / would like to thank you for 24 years of mostly great memories. So many wins, so many losses, but most importantly so many positive lifelong relationships.

Watching our kids grow up on & off the fields / courts is what its always been about to me. THANKS to my past administration and school staff that where supportive of our program. BIG THANKS to all my past asst coaches because without you none of our success would have been possible!

Obviously the BIGGEST THANKS and most important is to all my present and past players. For the last 24 years we have had workouts, practices, games, meals, road trips, many good and even sometimes bad but needed conversations. I have spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars supporting you playing FB, running track, playing AAU all over the East Coast and have loved ever minute of it.

BUT UNFORTUNATELY the last few weeks ive had concerns with the day to day educational system. After thoughts and prayers i will stepping away from MC Schools. I need a change. My future moves are still to be determined but you will always be on my mind and heart.

Martin is set to return five of its top seven scorers next season. Its leading scorer was a freshman: Jordan Matthewson, who averaged 16.1 points-per-game.
