Drake Maye, the quarterback for UNC, has demonstrated remarkable consistency in the ACC over the past two years. However, he is still able to surprise with unexpected throws.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Maye stated that he will not take part in the Senior Day events this week and he has not made a decision on whether or not this will be his last season at Chapel Hill.

“After careful consideration, I can honestly say that my experience at Carolina has been amazing. However, in my personal opinion, Senior Day should be reserved for graduating seniors who have put in their blood, sweat, and tears throughout their last year. This special day should be dedicated to those individuals.”

When questioned about potentially playing his last year of college football, Maye replied, “I am unsure at this time. I have not yet decided on my plans for next year.”

“I am solely focused on the remaining three games. Anything can happen, so I am not making any assumptions. My main concern is these upcoming games against three strong ACC opponents who are all playing close to home. After that, I will see what happens.”

Maye’s family has a long history with UNC sports, but it would be unexpected for someone of his stature to go back to college. Maye is projected to be one of the top 5 picks in the 2024 draft and has proven himself as a top quarterback in the country after an impressive 2022 season.

In nine games, the second-year player has thrown for 2,803 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 230 pounds, this promising prospect possesses impressive arm power, precision, and agility that has caught the attention of NFL teams in need of a quarterback.

On Monday, Coach Mack Brown discussed the matter, stating that the decision was in Maye’s hands. Maye will reach the age of 22 in August of next year.

Brown stated that they will inquire if Maye would like to participate in the Senior Day celebrations. They clarified that it is not their responsibility to make that decision for him.

Brown stated that he was confident Maye would participate in the draft and believed that Saturday would undoubtedly mark Maye’s final home game.

On Saturday evening, the Tar Heels (7-2) will have a home game against Duke (6-3), followed by their last regular season games against Clemson and NC State.
