Wake Forest softball advances in playoffs with win over Corinth Holders
Corinth Holders managed to score a run in the first inning on Wednesday at Wake Forest, but the Pirates didn’t score again after that.
Wake Forest scored six unanswered runs to defeat Corinth Holders 6-1 in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state playoffs.
Ava Marks scored the first run of the game off a single by McKenzie Murray, giving Corinth Holders a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that lead was short lived.
Kaylee Bowers recorded a leadoff double for Wake Forest with a fly ball to left field. Bowers scored to tie the game when Jilian Livengood singled to the shortstop.
Wake Forest eventually took a 3-1 lead in the first inning. Cara Nguyen, who came in to run for Livengood, scored on a double by Olivia Morgan. Victoria Morgan replaced Morgan as the courtesy runner, then scored the third run of the game when Paisley Meyers hit a single on a line drive to center.
Wake Forest led Corinth Holders 3-1 after the first inning.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fourth inning. Jazzmyn Ohlson led off the inning with a double to left field, then Bowers hit ah ome run to right field, which also brought Ohlson home.
The two-run homer gave Wake Forest a 5-1 lead after four innings.
Ohlson scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning off a double by Mia Spahlinger.
Corinth Holders went down in order in the seventh inning with a pop out and two strikeouts as Wake Forest secured a trip to the fourth round.
Livengood pitched the full game for Wake Forest, allowing just two hits and one run. Facing 23 batters, Livengood recorded 10 strikeouts.
Wake Forest will face the winner of Lumberton and Wakefield in the fourth round. The third round matchup is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. at Wakefield. The game has been postponed twice due to weather concerns.
