It is normal for nerves to be present in state championship matches, especially for teams who have never been in the spotlight before.

Brevard did not experience any stage fright.

The Blue Devils swept Camden County 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-14) at Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday to secure their first N.C. High School Athletic Association 2A volleyball title in their inaugural showing.

Last year, the Blue Devils fell just one round short of reaching the championship match.

“This has been a lengthy journey… we were on the brink of success last year and we finally achieved it this year, and I am filled with immense pride,” stated Brevard coach Cori Bryson. “I always had faith in this team. Whether it was on the offensive or defensive end, serving or passing, we consistently gave 100 percent effort.”

Brevard’s strong front court, powerful swings, and quick defensive moves led them to a dominant 25-12 win in the first set. Despite making their third consecutive appearance in the championship, the Bruins were unable to overcome Brevard’s skills and fell short in the second set with a score of 25-15.

Brevard dominated in the third set, winning 25-14 and securing the title. This victory sent the fans from Transylvania County home with some well-deserved hardware.

The team Brevard (32-2), ranked second in the 2A West, received a signature performance from their standout middle hitter Meleah Foster at the net. Additionally, junior defensive specialist Rafa Dabao played a crucial role in keeping multiple points alive.

Foster was awarded the Most Valuable Player title in the championship game.

Foster stated that they became comfortable with the facility during warm-ups and had confidence in their ability to succeed. It was not as intimidating as they anticipated, and they were determined to push themselves in order to achieve victory.

The Blue Devils had previously played against both 3A champion Kings Mountain and 1A runner-up Polk County a total of four times. This was their debut in the volleyball championship.

Senior Carlyn Tanis led Camden County (23-4), the second seed in the 2A East.

The Bruins, who had won 12 consecutive games leading up to the match, were optimistic that third time would be the charm following their second place finishes in 2021 and 2022.

“Unfortunately, this evening did not go as planned. However, I must acknowledge Brevard for their tough gameplay that hindered our usual strategies,” stated Ashley Miller, coach of Camden County. “I am incredibly proud of my team for their perseverance and determination throughout the entire season. Returning for a third year in a row is a testament to the character of my players whom I work with daily.”

After four consecutive wins by the East from 2015-18, Brevard’s recent victory ensures that the West has now claimed five consecutive titles in the 2A category.

Prior to the competition, a single player from each team was given sportsmanship awards by NCHSAA. Representing Camden County was Carlyn Tanis, a senior, while Brevard’s recipient was senior Ella Scott.
