Northwood picks Dalton Brown to fill head football coach role
Northwood High School did not take long to find its next head football coach. The Chargers announced on Tuesday that they’ve hired Dalton Brown as their next leader. Brown is an an alum of Northwood, where he played football and basketball. He attended Campbell University on a football scholarship and graduated from there in 2015 with a degree in Homeland Security Concentration in Intelligence.
Brown is replacing Mitch Johnson, who resigned in March with the intention of taking a coaching job elsewhere.
The new coach has been an assistant at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh under Ben Kolstad since 2021. He also coached at Nation Ford High School in South Carolina and at Appalachian State University as a graduate assistant.
“First, I would like to say that I am home and I can’t wait to get to work,” Brown said in a statement. “Thank you Dr. Walston, Coach Vernon, and the rest of the Administrative Team for entrusting me with this opportunity to lead the program that I was once a part of as a player and was my first introduction to this great game. Secondly, thank you to Coach Frazier, Coach Kolstad and the rest of the Leesville Community for allowing me to be a part of Leesville Road High School and the tight knit community.”
“This is a very unique opportunity where I get to be the Head Coach of my alma mater and I do not take that lightly. This comes with an extra sense of pride of giving back to the community, school, and program that gave me so much and helped to shape me into the man I am today. I am excited for the opportunity, I am excited to get to work with our players and student athletes, and I am excited to build a culture of tradition, discipline, accountability and excellence. Pittsboro is home and I’m ready to work hard on day one.”
“We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Brown back home to Northwood,” said Northwood Athletic Director Camerons Vernon. “I always admired Coach Brown when he was a high school student because of his work ethic and demeanor. He understands the tradition and culture of Northwood and I am looking forward to working with Coach Brown for years to come.”
