East Rowan, West Rowan pick up tournament wins; No. 8 Northwest Guilford falls
Rowan County schools went 2-1 on the second day of East Rowan’s Easter weekend baseball tournament.
Most notably, West Rowan knocked off No. 8 Northwest Guilford in the day’s second game, and the host Mustanags improved to 12-1 on the season with a win over upset-minded Mooresville. South Iredell was the lone school from another county to win, earning a shutout victory against Jesse Carson.
South Iredell 3, Jesse Carson 0
To open the day, South Iredell (8-5) earned the shutout win thanks to six innings of four-hit ball by winning pitcher Luke Snell and a save by senior Tyler Hughesman.
The Cougars (6-6) gave up 10 hits in the loss, but the lone RBIs belonged to South Iredell’s Drew Bryant and Tanner Byrd.
West Rowan 8, No. 8 Northwest Guilford 2
Northwest Guilford (9-2) didn’t score until getting two across in the bottom of the seventh. For the Falcons (9-3), sophomore pitcher Maddox Moore struck out seven batters in five innings, allowing just three hits.
West Rowan led 2-0 entering the third when it pushed five more across to blow the game wide open.
Eli Graham (three RBIs) and Brice Knox each had three hits while Cole Blevins (one RBI) had two and Drew Burton had one.
Northwest Guilford had four errors. Its two RBIs came from Carter Jackson and Brady Young.
East Rowan 12, Mooresville 5
The Mustangs (12-1) stayed undefeated at home this season with a 13-hit performance along with seven stolen bases. Freshman Sam Blackwelder had a team-high three RBIs and sophomore Harrison Ailshie had two RBIs on two doubles.
Mooresville (1-12) cut into the lead and trailed just 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the host Mustangs broke the game wide open with six runs.
Cobb Hightower, Braden Shive, Nate Hayworth, McCall Henderson, and Mason Phelps each added one RBI apiece.
