Justin Fields, quarterback for the Bears, has a thumb dislocation and is unlikely to participate in the upcoming game against the Raiders on WRALSportsFan.com.
LAKE FOREST, Ill.
The coach of the Chicago Bears, Matt Eberflus, announced on Monday that quarterback Justin Fields will probably be unable to play in the upcoming game due to a dislocated right thumb. It is expected that he will miss at least one game.
Eberflus expressed uncertainty about Fields’ ability to play in the upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders. This comes after Fields suffered an injury during the Bears’ 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. It is likely that rookie Tyson Bagent will take his place as the starting player.
Eberflus announced that the Bears have brought on board Phil Snow, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. Snow will be taking on the role of a defensive analyst, which was opened up when former coordinator Alan Williams stepped down from his position in the previous month.
During the third quarter of the game against Minnesota, Fields sustained an injury on Chicago’s initial possession. It appeared that he landed awkwardly on his hand while attempting to throw the ball away, as he was being sacked by Danielle Hunter. Following this, the Bears chose to punt on the following play and Fields went to the locker room for further evaluation.
An X-ray revealed that there were no fractures. Fields had an MRI on Monday, and Eberflus did not have a set timeline for when Fields would be able to return.
“It ultimately depends on the strength of the grip,” stated Eberflus. “There will be swelling that naturally occurs from this injury. We should have a better understanding by the end of the week.”
When questioned about the MRI results and the possibility of surgery for Fields, he responded with similar answers. The injury complicates the Bears’ future plans for the quarterback role.
Fields has a starting record of 6-25 in three years. The Bears will need to make a decision at the end of the season about whether to use the fifth-year option for 2025.
After a rocky start in the first three games, Fields impressed with two strong passing performances but struggled against the Vikings. He threw 6 out of 10 passes for 58 yards, had one interception, and was sacked four times. In his debut, Bagent completed 10 out of 14 passes for 83 yards but also had an interception.
From 2020 to 2022, Snow served as Carolina’s defensive coordinator and will now be responsible for advance scouting. Eberflus stated that he will be based at Halas Hall but will not be present at Bears games.
In the past, Rod Marinelli, a former coach for the Detroit Lions and current defensive coordinator for the Bears, introduced them at the NFL combine several years ago. During his time with the Lions, Snow served as a linebackers coach on Marinelli’s staff. Additionally, Eberflus and Marinelli were colleagues while working as assistants for the Dallas Cowboys.
