The fourth edition of the HighSchoolOT all-state boys swimming and diving team includes 21 athletes who have been recognized on the team at least twice. Leading the pack is Lucca Battaglini, a senior at Durham School of the Arts, who has made the team for the sixth time over the course of three seasons.

The selection for the all-state team is determined by one’s performance in either the N.C. High School Athletic Association or N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association championships.

The first team consists of the top two times/marks, followed by the second team with the next-best two, and then the third team with the next-best two.

At certain events, there were instances of equal scores among various categories. To determine the teams, the deciding factor was the placement of the athletes on the podium (wherein a 1A champion would take precedence over a 4A athlete who placed second in the same event). If the athletes were still tied, they were both included in the all-state team. No tiebreakers were required for the athletes who made it to this year’s team.

Thirteen athletes qualified for two separate events this year: Norvy Clontz and Aidan Hill from Charlotte Latin, Lucca Battaglini from Durham School of the Arts, Sean Setzer from Ashley, William Witmer from Hoggard, Santi Alzate-Celin from Charlotte Country Day, James Bennison from Heritage, Matthew Marsteiner from Leesville Road, Albert Smelzer from Page, Christopher Zhang from Ardrey Kell, Andrew Commins from Carrboro, Grayson Nye from Middle Creek, and Nate Hohm from East Mecklenburg.

These athletes have been featured multiple times in their high school careers on the all-state swimming and diving team for HSOT. Battaglini has the highest number of first-team appearances, with six.

First Team

Hayden Schroeder from Lake Norman Charter is a senior who excels in diving. He won the 3A championship with a record-breaking score of 581.70.

Jacob Pollina from Northern Guilford won the 4A diving championship as a sophomore with a score of 456.20.

Norvy Clontz, a junior at Charlotte Latin, won the 200 freestyle at the NCISAA D1 championships with a time of 1:36.70, setting a new NCISAA record. They received 200 free.

In the 200 IM event at the 4A championship, senior Charles Heisig from Marvin Ridge achieved a time of 1:47.88, earning him the title.

In the 200 IM event at the 4A level, Ian Stutts from Enloe High School finished in second place with a time of 1:48.01 as a junior.

Albert Smelzer from Page High School (sophomore) placed 2nd in the 4A category with a score of 20.12, earning 50 free points.

In the category of 100 butterfly, Matthew Marsteiner from Leesville Road High School emerged as the 4A champion with a time of 47.61 seconds in his senior year.

Alex Townsend of Enloe High School placed second in the 100-yard butterfly event at the 4A State Championship with a time of 48.19. He is currently a junior.
Lucca Battaglini, a senior at Durham School of the Arts, won the 3A state championship with a time of 42.60, setting a new state record and earning him 100 free.

Free 100: Sean Setzer, Ashley (senior) – 43.99, 4A champion

Santi Alzate-Celin from Charlotte Country Day, a sophomore, won the NCISAA D1 championship with a time of 4:20.62, setting a new record. He is eligible to receive 500 units for free.

Cooper Thomas from Cleveland High School placed second in the 4A diving competition with a score of 455.15.

Santi Alzate-Celin from Charlotte Country Day (a sophomore) finished in second place in the NCISAA D1 race with a time of 1:38.02 and received 200 points for free.

James Bennison from Heritage High School (senior) won first place in the 200-meter race with a time of 1 minute and 38.68 seconds. He also holds the title of 4A champion.

In the 200 IM event, senior Freddy Klein from Charlotte Country Day set a new record at the NCISAA Division 1 Championship with a time of 1:49.07.

In the 200 individual medley, Grayson Nye from Middle Creek (a senior) placed third in the 4A category with a time of 1:49.41.

50 free: Christopher Zhang, a senior from Ardrey Kell, placed third in the 4A division with a time of 20.35 seconds.
50 complimentary: Luke Nebrich of West Davidson High School, a senior, achieved a time of 20.36 seconds, making him the champion in the 1A/2A division and setting a new record for that category.

Aidan Hill from Charlotte Latin, a senior, won the 100 fly event with a time of 48.26 at the NCISAA D1 championship, setting a new NCISAA record.

In the 100 butterfly event, Andrew Commins of Carrboro High School took first place with a time of 48.33 seconds, earning him the title of 3A champion.

Christopher Zhang, a senior at Ardrey Kell, received a score of 44.53 and secured second place in the 4A division, earning 100 free.

Albert Smelzer from Page High School, a sophomore, achieved a time of 44.58 seconds and placed 3rd in the 4A category for 100 meter race.

Matthew Marsteiner, a senior from Leesville Road, won the 4A championship with a time of 4:21.91 and earned 500 free points.

Hudson DeGroote from South Garner High School (senior) finished in second place in the 4A division with a time of 4:24.02, receiving a prize of 500 free.

James Bennison from Heritage (senior) placed 2nd in the 4A division with a time of 47.97 seconds, earning 100 points.

Aidan Hill from Charlotte Latin (senior) received 100 returns with a record time of 48.74 as the NCISAA D1 champion.

In the 4A category, Maksym Nechydyuk from Ardrey Kell placed third in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 55.80 as a senior.

Nate Robinson from Myers Park was placed fourth in the 4A Diving competition with a score of 399.45 as a sophomore.

200 free: Jack Haywood from Providence High School finished second in the 4A division with a time of 1 minute and 38.78 seconds. He swam unattached in the 200 free event.

Wiley Spinner from Charlotte Latin, a senior, achieved a time of 1:39.24 and placed third in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 1, winning 200 free race.

In the 200 IM event, William Witmer from Hoggard High School, a senior, finished in fourth place with a time of 1:49.70 in the 4A division.

The 200 IM race was competed by Isaac Holtham of Ardrey Kell as a senior. He finished in 5th place in the 4A category with a time of 1:49.84.

Lucas Li from East Chapel Hill, a junior, finished 3rd in the 4A 100 fly event with a time of 49.14 seconds.

Michael Rice, a sophomore from Marvin Ridge, ran a time of 44.63 seconds and placed 4th in the 4A division, earning a free entry into the competition.

Nate Hohm from East Mecklenburg (senior) achieved 44.72 and placed fifth in the 4A category with a score of 100 points.

Aaron Davidson and Sanderson (junior) earned a time of 4:29.72, placing 4th in the 4A category and receiving 500 free.

Bartee Granger from Providence Day, a junior, came in second place in the NCISAA D1 with a score of 49.24 points.
100 back: Chris Erickson, Northern Durham (senior) — 49.27, 3rd in 4A

In the 100 breaststroke event, Jack Gessner from Providence (senior) placed 4th in the 4A division with a time of 55.95.

In the event 100 breaststroke, Calvin Schaper from Research Triangle won with a time of 56.04 seconds, earning him the title of 1A/2A champion as a sophomore.
