North Macedonia, formerly a republic of Yugoslavia, joined both FIFA and UEFA in 1994 and has been participating in international competitions since then. In their debut official match, the team, known as the Crveni Risovi, defeated Slovenia 4-1. Their largest victory to date was on November 9, 1996, when they dominated against Liechtenstein with a score of 11-1 in Eschen-Mauren.

Despite having several well-known football players from former Yugoslavia, the North Macedonian team has still not made it to the finals of a major tournament. Goran Pandev, who has played for notable clubs such as Lazio, Inter, Napoli, and Galatasaray, is considered the most distinguished player on the team.

Pandev netted his 28th and 29th goals for North Macedonia during their 3-0 victory against Belarus in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. Despite his impressive record, Goce Seldloski holds the title for most appearances with 100. At Philip II Arena, North Macedonia sports red jerseys with a yellow stripe and red shorts for home games, while their away kits are white in color.
