On July 2, 1988, the Faroe Islands became a member of FIFA and had their first official match against Iceland on August 24. Although they were defeated by Iceland in Akranes, two years later they achieved a significant victory by beating Austria 1-0 in the Euro 1992 qualifiers, which remains a notable moment in the national team’s history.

The Faroe Islands have not yet succeeded in qualifying for a major tournament, but they have been steadily improving each year. The national team, known as the Landsliðið, plays their home matches at Torsvollur which can hold up to 6,000 spectators. The Faroe Islands’ largest victory was against Gibraltar on March 1, 2014 (4-1), while their largest defeat was in 1996 when they lost 8-1 to Yugoslavia in front of their home crowd.

During the 2016 European Championship qualifiers, the underdog Faroe Islands defeated Greece twice, but unfortunately were unable to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament in France. Some well-known players who represented the Faroe Islands national team include Frodi Benjaminsen, Oli Johannesen, Rogvi Jacobsen, Todi Jonsson, and Jakup Mikkelsen.
