Fortuna Sittard, established on July 1, 1968, is a relatively recent addition to Dutch football. Although the team saw strong players like Kevin Hofland, Mark van Bommel, and Fernando Ricksen during the 1990s, they were unable to rival powerhouse clubs Ajax and PSV. In 1999, however, the Fortunezen managed to reach the Dutch Cup final, where they faced off against Ajax.

Amsterdammers defeated Fortuna Sittard 2-0 at De Kuip, with Jesper Gronkjaer scoring a brace. Fortuna Sittard players wear yellow shirts and green shorts when playing at home, while their away kit is white. The Fortunezen host their rivals at Fortuna Sittard Stadion. The venue was built in 1999, and it can hold up to 12,500 spectators.

Mark Van Bommel, the aforementioned midfielder, is the most well-known player to have represented this club. Following his departure from Fortuna Sittard in 1999, Van Bommel went on to play for prestigious teams such as PSV, Barcelona, Bayern Munchen, and Milan.
