Which athletes should we keep an eye on for the upcoming ‘Clash of the Carolinas’ track and field competition on Saturday?
While Saturday will mark the ending of winter sports in North Carolina, it will also feature one of the bigger spring sports regular-season events.
The fifth annual Clash of the Carolinas event, organized by Cuthbertson, gathers the top track and field competitors from both North and South Carolina.
The gates will open at 8 a.m. The field events will begin at 9:30 a.m. The track events will commence at 10 a.m. with a rolling schedule to follow.
Cuthbertson is coming off a strong weekend at New Balance Indoor Nationals.
The female athletes of Cuthbertson, known as the “Carolina Cavaliers,” achieved second place in two national events, the mile and the 4-by-800. Additionally, they set two remarkable national records: in the distance medley relay and 4-by-mile relay.
Josie Schihl, Stella Kermes, Justine Preisano, and Charlotte Bell were the four individuals who achieved the four-mile relay record, while Preisano, Bell, Kermes, and Tatiana Blake collaborated for the distance medley.
Several performers will have a well-deserved break this weekend, however there are still many other main acts scheduled for Saturday.
To get a sneak peek at the event, we will examine some of the leading athletes from North Carolina who will be participating.
Boys Athletes
Koredell Bartley and Dudley – You may know this individual as a two-time HSOT all-state football athlete, but his speed is also put to good use on the track. It’s possible that the Panthers’ relay team may create some buzz.
Unfortunately, Antwan Hughes Jr. from Parkland was disqualified in his prime indoor event. However, he has made an impressive comeback and is excelling in the 100 and 200, in which he was a state runner-up last year. He is currently the top seeded athlete in both events.
William Leak, a student from Hoke County, recently won the indoor long jump competition and is also recognized as one of the top performers in the state for the triple jump.
C.J. Martin from Clayton will be competing in the 100 and 400 events on Saturday after taking the indoor 300 title.
Jordan Wolverton from Mount Tabor is the highest-ranked athlete in the 110 hurdles and high jump at the indoor competition. He placed third in the 300 hurdles at the 4A championships last year.
Girls Athletes
Sophomore Kasey Dingman from Lake Norman is one of the leading female runners in distance events, aside from those from Cuthbertson.
Tyler Glover from Ardrey Kell is well-regarded for her impressive shot put skills, having won both 4A indoor and outdoor titles last season. Additionally, her discus marks have been very impressive this year.
Isabelle Liu from Cuthbertson placed third in the 4A triple jump last year and is one of the top contenders this weekend in both the triple and long jumps.
Noelle Millner from Dudley holds the highest record among all discus throwers for Saturday’s competition.
Carmen PenaSoto, an Olympic athlete, finished fourth in the 4A 100-meter hurdles last year and has already achieved impressive results this year.
