Isaiah Evans’ connection with the net was even more intimate than the fans who had to crowd into the bleachers in Myers Park’s gymnasium.
On Friday night, Evans did what he’s often done when the lights are the brightest — take on all comers and lift his team to a victory.

A Duke recruit led North Mecklenburg to a 79-63 victory over top-seeded Myers Park on Friday in the fourth round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys basketball playoffs. They scored an impressive 48 points, propelling their team to victory against the defending state champions.
The Vikings’ next game, the 4A West regional final, will be on Thursday, hosted by Wake Forest’s Lawrence Joel Coliseum at a 8 p.m. against second-seeded Lake Norman, which defeated Chambers on Friday.
At halftime, North Mecklenburg had a 31-26 lead due to a strong end to the first half. The team did not take the lead until 1:13 remaining in the second quarter and ended the half with a strong run, including an impressive dunk by Evans, while Myers Park struggled to score.
North Mecklenburg High School, with a current record of 28 wins and 3 losses, continues to dominate with a winning streak of 15 games and has yet to be defeated by a team within the state. The team did not decrease their pace, as their player Evans contributed 13 points in the first half and had an impressive performance of 35 points in the second half, including 21 points in the third quarter.
Overall, Evans made six shots from beyond the arc, four of which occurred during his dominant third quarter performance.
The majority of the Vikings’ points were earned by Evans, but Exavier Young and Chadlyn Traylor also performed well on defense, preventing Myers Park from finding their groove.
After trailing against Myers Park, North Meck gained a 26-25 advantage and then went on to outscore them 30-11 in the following quarter, resulting in a 56-36 lead going into the final quarter. This 20-point lead was the biggest of the entire game.
The top-ranked team in the 4A West, Myers Park (27-3), had a 23-game winning streak before suffering their only in-state loss to a non-high school team, such as a sports academy.
Sir Mohammed (Notre Dame recruit) had 20 to lead the Mustangs while Bishop Boswell (Tennessee recruit) and Ashton King added 14 (King had three 3s in the first quarter alone). Sadiq White Jr., one of the top-ranked juniors in the country, added 10.
