Sean Monahan broke the tie with 3:13 remaining in the game and the Winnipeg Jets came back from being down three goals in the third period to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on Saturday.

After Pyotr Kochetkov, the goalie for the Carolina team, left his crease in an attempt to clear the puck but was unsuccessful, the puck was controlled by Monahan who then successfully scored into the unguarded net as Kochetkov hurriedly returned to his position.

“We were attempting to increase the pressure on them,” stated Rick Bowness, the coach of Winnipeg’s team. “Despite equalizing the score, our goal was to sustain that intensity. However, when their goalie left the net, we found ourselves scrambling to retrieve the pucks, and it happened to work out in our favor.”

With only 10 seconds remaining, Nino Niederreiter scored an unchallenged goal for the second time in the period. Winnipeg’s Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele also contributed goals, leading the team to their fifth win in the last six games.

“It’s always satisfying to come back and win,” Monahan stated. “The whole team stuck together and it resulted in a great victory.”

Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas and Teuvo Teravainen scored for Carolina. Andrei Svechnikov had two assists and Kochetkov made 28 saves for the Hurricanes, who lost for the third time in five games.

According to Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour, each goal was accompanied by a small mistake on our part. When facing strong opponents, that’s to be expected and they will take advantage of it.

The Jets were down 3-0, but they quickly bounced back in the third period with three goals in just six minutes. At 1:36 into the period, Connor scored from the point after Seth Jarvis failed to clear the zone.

At 3:02, Niederreiter scored with a backhanded shot, reducing Carolina’s lead to 3-2.

At the 5:40 mark, Scheifele tied the game at 3 with a goal on the power-play. He faked out Kochetkov with his forehand and lured the goalie away from the net, ultimately scoring with a backhand shot.

“I believed that we were performing at a higher level during the initial 40 minutes,” stated Winnipeg’s defenseman Josh Morrisey. “Thus, it’s simpler to maintain that momentum instead of attempting to change course after a disappointing 40 minutes.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for the Jets, who struggled with their special teams and fell behind 3-0. Winnipeg had an 0 for 4 record on power plays and allowed Aho to score a power-play goal in the second period.

Both teams struggled to generate offense in the afternoon game. The Hurricanes were the first to score in the second period at 10:12, thanks to Necas’ goal.

Necas received a long pass in the middle of the ice and forced Winnipeg’s Dylan Samberg to decide between defending against the pass or the shot. Necas quickly shot the puck from the left circle and scored against Hellebuyck.

At 15:54, Aho assisted Teravainen shortly after Monahan hit the post with his shot. Aho quickly got to the puck before Monahan did, passed it to Teravainen, and gave their team a 2-0 lead.

With 2:04 remaining in the period, Hellebuyck made a spectacular save when Aho delivered a crossing pass to Seth Jarvis at the post.

Aho and Svechnikov executed a comparable play, resulting in Aho scoring a goal on Carolina’s power play with only 48 seconds remaining in the period to give them a 3-0 advantage.

On Sunday, Winnipeg will be playing at Buffalo.

Carolina will be hosting Montreal on Thursday.
