The North Stokes girls’ team is having a remarkable season and added to their success with a significant away victory in their conference.

The North Stokes girls basketball team had a successful record of 17-11 last year. It was the first time in eleven years that the Vikings achieved double-digit wins in a season.

The team’s current record of 17 wins is about to be surpassed, as their performance in 2024 has already resulted in a record of 15-2. They achieved this after winning a road game against their county rival, South Stokes, with a score of 59-37.

Gabbi Greer, a second-year player, proved unstoppable in the latter half of the game. She scored 17 points out of her total of 21, leading her team to a dominant victory and maintaining their perfect record of 5 wins in league play.

The Vikings’ initial success with shooting from long range allowed them to secure a lead that they maintained throughout the game.

In the beginning of the game, Caroline Mabe and Lexie Knight each made a three-point shot, and Knight also scored the last nine points of the first quarter, giving North Stokes a 19-10 lead.

Scoring was difficult in the beginning of the second quarter. Mabe and Knight were able to make the only two field goals for the team during this time, resulting in a 6-3 lead for the Vikings over the Sauras at halftime.

In the third quarter, five players from South Stokes contributed to the score, but their efforts were not sufficient to stop Greer’s dominance in the paint.

Greer scored 12 points, giving North a comfortable lead of 44-24 going into the fourth quarter.

The final quarter started off with a successful three-pointer from Greer and then saw Caroline and Kinley Mabe team up to score a total of 9 points during the period.

Jessica Basurto scored two three-point shots in the last eight minutes, ending the game with 9 points and leading South’s team.

North Stokes will conclude the first half of conference play next Wednesday with a game against East Wilkes.

South Stokes currently has an overall record of 8-6, with a conference record of 2-2. They are aiming to end their two-game losing streak when they play at home against Elgin on Tuesday evening.
