When questioned about the well-being of starting quarterback Riley Leonard, Duke football coach Mike Elko restated a commonly used statement on Monday.
Leonard was forced to exit Saturday’s match against Florida State in the third quarter with an ankle injury, with just under seven minutes remaining.
After consulting with the doctors and other individuals, I believe that Riley’s condition will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis, stated Elko.
It is not clear if Leonard will be able to play on Saturday against Louisville.
Leonard returned to the game after sustaining a right ankle injury against Notre Dame, but Duke was defeated 38-20 by Florida State on Saturday. The team dropped four spots to No. 20 in the AP Top 25 rankings.
After Leonard was injured and replaced by backup quarterback Henry Belin, Duke’s offense only gained 35 yards. Belin completed one pass for seven yards out of six attempts.
Leonard was observed attempting to persuade Elko to return to the game while on the sidelines. After exiting the game, Leonard was spotted running around and preparing for play.
Leonard completed 7 out of 16 passes for a total of 69 yards and also threw an interception during Saturday’s game.
In the second quarter of Saturday’s game, Duke (5-2, 2-1 ACC) held a 17-7 lead.
Elko acknowledged that his team performed admirably for three quarters against Florida State. However, he believes there is still room for improvement in the fourth quarter.
Elko announced on Monday that Duke’s senior cornerback Myles Jones is currently dealing with an injury and his status is being evaluated on a daily basis.
Elko stated that it may be a tight deadline to prepare Jones for Saturday due to his injury.
Duke gave up three scores in a row during the fourth quarter on Saturday.
Elko reassured me that the response of this group is the one thing I don’t doubt.
On Saturday at 3:30 p.m., Duke will play Louisville on the road. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN.
Louisville (6-1, 3-1 ACC) had a week of rest before their last game, a 38-21 loss to Pittsburgh.
The Blue Devils’ defensive strategy will aim to hinder the momentum of junior running back Jawhar Jordan, who has been deemed by Elko as the most dynamic running back in the ACC.
Jordan has gained 661 yards while running the ball 89 times, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. He has scored a total of nine touchdowns.
