Iowa has moved up to the second spot, Colorado is now ranked third, and South Carolina leads the women’s AP Top 25 rankings after a tumultuous week. This information can be found on WRALSportsFan.com.
Iowa and Colorado have climbed to the second and third spots, respectively, in The Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll. This follows a tumultuous week where half of the top 10 teams suffered defeats, leaving South Carolina as the top-ranked team.
The Gamecocks, with a perfect record of 15 wins and 0 losses, dominated against Missouri in their only game last week. In the latest poll released on Monday, the team received all 36 first-place votes from the national media panel. This was before their impressive win against Kentucky, where Ashlyn Watkins made a memorable dunk.
UCLA and Baylor, who had not lost any games before, were defeated and saw a decrease in their rankings. The Bruins went down from second place to fifth, while the Bears dropped from fourth to 12th after experiencing losses against Kansas and Iowa State. Iowa State, on the other hand, made their entrance into the rankings at No. 24.
After easily defeating previously ranked No. 14 Indiana on Saturday evening, Caitlin Clark and Iowa rose to second place in the rankings. Colorado and N.C. State also climbed in the rankings, trailing behind the Hawkeyes. The Buffaloes have achieved a record of 15-1, their best start since the 1992-93 season.
After defeating the Bruins and handing them their first loss of the season, USC rose to sixth place in the rankings.
The Kansas State team climbed five positions to reach seventh place, their highest ranking since they were ranked fifth in the preseason poll in 2003. Following closely behind were Stanford and UConn, with the Huskies rising four spots to rejoin the top 10 at No. 9. Despite a strong 16-game winning streak, defending champions LSU’s streak came to an end with a loss to Auburn, causing them to drop three spots to 10th.
After being defeated by Iowa State, West Virginia is no longer included in the poll.
Tara VanDerveer, coach of Stanford, is now just one win away from matching the record for most wins in college basketball held by Duke’s men’s coach, Mike Krzyzewski. After her team’s victory against Utah on Friday, VanDerveer’s record stands at 1,201 wins, but they were defeated by Colorado on Sunday. Her next opportunity to tie the record will be at home against Oregon on Friday.
Last week, Florida State beat two teams that were ranked in the top 25, defeating North Carolina (previously ranked 20th) and Virginia Tech (previously ranked 11th). As a result, Florida State moved up from 21st to 15th in the rankings.
