The reason behind the Carolina Hurricanes’ decision to partner with Fanatics Sportsbook for sports betting has been revealed on WRALSportsFan.com.
According to Brian Murphy, a reporter for WRAL,
During their search for a partner in gambling ahead of its legalization in North Carolina, the Carolina Hurricanes spoke with top players in the mobile sports betting industry.
The company ultimately became recognized for selling merchandise such as jerseys and hats rather than facilitating bets.
The Hurricanes have confidence in their decision to partner with Fanatics Sportsbook for a long-term agreement. This will involve the establishment of a brick-and-mortar sportsbook either at PNC Arena or in close proximity in Raleigh.
“Their current market share may not be significant, but we believe they have the potential to reach it,” stated Don Wadell, president and general manager of the Hurricanes, in an exclusive interview with WRAL. “They are committed to allocating the necessary resources to capitalize on opportunities within the state of North Carolina.”
The team has a dedicated and influential group leading their efforts. We believe they are the perfect match for us.
FanDuel and DraftKings dominate the market with a combined 60% share in the expanding world of sports betting. However, emerging competitors such as ESPN Bet and Fanatics are aiming to carve out their own niche, while well-known brands like BetMGM and Caesars are also making their way into North Carolina.
Fanatics Inc., led by Cheif Executive Michael Rubin, now dominates the merchandise space for licensed apparel with some likening its spot in the industry to Amazon’s ubiquitous presence for online shoppers. Rubin was a part owner of the NBA’s 76eers and the NHL’s Devils, but sold before Jacksonville, Florida-based Fanatics became involved in sports betting in 2023.
According to Ari Borod, the chief business officer of Fanatics Betting & Gaming, a subsidiary of Fanatics, our company is more than just a sports betting company – we are a sports company.
In certain regions, Fanatics Sportsbook introduced a special offer for new bettors to receive a jersey. Users on Fanatics can accumulate FanCash through merchandise purchases and can also earn it through placing bets. This cash can then be used for further betting or buying merchandise.
“A multitude of chances for our clients to receive swag, specifically Hurricanes swag,” stated Waddell. “Their extensive customer database presents a valuable opportunity for us. We will work together to benefit from this.”
There is a lot that they can provide.
When is the expected launch date for mobile sports betting?
The date for the launch of mobile sports betting in North Carolina has not been announced by the Lottery Commission. It was previously stated by the commission that betting would not begin on Jan. 8 or by the Super Bowl on Feb. 11, as allowed by law.
On Tuesday, Gov. Roy Cooper informed journalists that the intention is to implement the idea before the start of March Madness.
North Carolina, the 10th most populous state, could be one of the larger markets for sports betting. Bettors in Virginia, for example, placed nearly $5 billion in wagers last year.
Borod commented that there is a strong connection within the team, with multiple professional teams and a significant interest in college basketball. This makes for a thriving market.
Nine companies or groups, including Fanatics, have applied for an operator license. To be granted a license, sports betting companies must have a written agreement with specific teams, venues, or governing bodies, as mandated by state law. This requirement was not initially included in the law, but was later added in the 2023 state budget.
The deal was initially disclosed in December, and WRAL verified it at that point. However, this marks the first instance where either party has publicly addressed the collaboration.
Both the Hurricanes and Fanatics did not reveal the financial details of their agreement, but they did confirm that it is a long-term deal. Waddell mentioned that there are possibilities for the agreement to last for more than 20 years.
Borod mentioned that the Hurricanes’ achievements were a factor in Fanatics’ decision to team up with them. The team has qualified for the playoffs for five years in a row and has advanced past the first round each time. In 2023, they had the second-highest record in the league and made it to the conference finals.
“They’re on the up and up, and I think they’re fan base has really been loyal over the last few years,” Borod said. “What we’ve seen in working with them is a real commitment to caring about growing our business. I don’t think they’ll see us as just another sponsor.”
A retail sportsbook
The Hurricanes have entered into a lengthy lease agreement and obtained rights for developing the area surrounding the arena, as part of the agreement for a $300-million renovation project at PNC Arena. The inclusion of a retail betting lounge has been a key aspect of this plan, while state legislators have debated the legalization of such activities.
Fanatics has three retail sportsbooks located at or near prominent venues throughout the country: at FedEx Field (where the NFL’s Washington Commanders play), near Progressive Field (home of the MLB’s Cleveland Guardians), and next to Nationwide Arena (home of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets).
Waddell mentioned that several companies were not interested in operating a retail sportsbook. Their focus was solely on online gambling, which is known to be more lucrative. However, the team believed that having a retail sportsbook at the arena would benefit their fans who attend games frequently. This was seen as a mutually beneficial decision.
The Hurricanes were intrigued by Fanatics’ eagerness to collaborate on a retail sportsbook, making it even more appealing to them.
Borod stated that some customers choose to place bets in person, while others prefer to conduct banking transactions in person. It is important to cater to all customers in the best way possible.
In states where mobile sports betting and retail books are legal, the majority of bets (over 95%) are made online. However, there is still potential for revenue at physical betting locations.
According to Borod, although the majority (90%) of your income is generated online, the remaining 10% is still significant. Therefore, having a physical retail option is crucial. It also provides another opportunity to engage with our brand.
“If someone is using their phone to place bets in our sportsbook, or if they are at a sports bar with Fanatics branding and watching screens displaying odds, it’s an experience that stays with them.”
Which one would you prefer, Backyard Bistro or PNC Arena?
The Hurricanes recently acquired Backyard Bistro, a dining and drinking establishment located on Trinity Road near the PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium complex. A large portion of the surrounding land in this area of Raleigh is owned by either the state or the university.
“We believed that this property would be a valuable asset for us,” Waddell stated. “The business they run on the property is stable and we believe we can enhance it by promoting it and adding new attractions to the Backyard. Having this property is crucial for us. The future in this area is unpredictable, so it’s important to have this property as a foundation for the next five to 10 years.”
The establishment will continue to be known as Backyard Bistro, and Waddell mentioned that its thriving catering services were also a contributing factor.
The initial idea was to utilize the restaurant as the retail sportsbook. However, according to the regulations set by the North Carolina Lottery Commission, retail sportsbooks must comply with certain requirements such as having a cage, count rooms, vaults, and other restricted areas that are under constant surveillance. The cage, which is used to hold money, must be completely enclosed.
It would pose a challenge to update a preexisting restaurant to comply with the current regulations. Adhering to these rules would be more feasible at PNC Arena. The company is collaborating with the committee to explore the possibility of locating some of those amenities nearby, but not directly on the premises.
Waddell stated that if it becomes necessary, we can temporarily relocate to Backyard Bistro. We have a plan ready for this situation. Additionally, we can also operate from PNC Arena as we have a plan in place here as well. Our objective is to be prepared to start accepting bets in North Carolina once the regulations are approved and it is legal to do so.
Wherever the retail book ends up, at the Bistro or at PNC Arena, it’s likely to be a temporary solution. PNC Arena is set to undergo a $300-million renovation over the next four or five years, and Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has development rights around the arena.
In the future, the goal is to potentially link the sportsbook to one of the locations we are considering for placement on the property. Wadell stated this plan.
Reworded: Information and sports jerseys sold by Fanatics.
Fanatics Sportsbook currently operates in 10 states, which include Virginia and Tennessee. On January 11th, it will be one of three operators to launch in Vermont. The company also runs under different names, such as Points Bet and Fanatics Experience, in eight additional states like New York and New Jersey.
Sports betting companies have traditionally relied on large-scale advertising efforts to draw in new customers, particularly since gambling has become legal in many states. However, Fanatics does not plan on bombarding fans with excessive TV or other advertisements.
The corporation has an extensive collection of sports enthusiasts from their merchandise purchases.
Borod stated that Fanatics has gained a significant amount of customer trust. The brand has a widespread presence nationwide, with a particularly strong following in North Carolina. Customers in this area actively engage with Fanatics’ products and brand.
