Fortuna Sittard joined Dutch football relatively recently, having been established on July 1, 1968. In the 1990s, notable players like Kevin Hofland, Mark van Bommel, and Fernando Ricksen were part of the team, but they were unable to compete with top Dutch clubs Ajax and PSV. In 1999, however, the Fortunezen had a successful run to the Dutch Cup final, where they faced off against Ajax for the title.

The team from Amsterdam emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Fortuna Sittard at De Kuip, with Jesper Gronkjaer scoring two goals. When playing at home, Fortuna Sittard players wear yellow shirts and green shorts, while their away kit is white. The Fortunezen will host their opponents at Fortuna Sittard Stadion, which was constructed in 1999 and has a capacity of 12,500 spectators.

Mark Van Bommel, the previously mentioned midfielder, is the most well-known soccer player to have played for the team. Following his departure from Fortuna Sittard in 1999, he went on to play for notable teams such as PSV, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Milan.
