A petition has been created asking for the sale of the Panthers team by owner David Tepper following an incident where he threw a drink at fans. The petition can be found on WRALSportsFan.com.
Over 3,700 individuals have expressed their support for an online petition urging David Tepper, owner of the Carolina Panthers, to sell the team.
On January 1st, Joey Blethen initiated the petition which currently has 3,790 signatures.
After throwing a drink at fans in Jacksonville on Sunday, Tepper was fined $300,000 by the NFL. The Panthers suffered a 26-0 loss to the Jaguars.
“I have a strong passion for this team and I apologize for my actions on Sunday,” stated Tepper. “I should have allowed NFL stadium security to handle any situations that arose. I acknowledge and abide by the NFL’s standards of conduct and accept the consequences imposed by the League for my behavior.”
The Panthers have a record of 31-67 since 2018, coinciding with Tepper’s ownership of the franchise. This ranks as the worst record in the NFL during this period.
During the 2023 season, the Panthers have won only 2 out of 16 games and are now preparing for their last game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In late November, the Panthers made the decision to dismiss head coach Frank Reich. Since then, Chris Tabor has been serving as the team’s interim coach.
The petition states that his time as the owner has been a disgrace to the franchise and the Carolina Panthers fans deserve stronger leadership.
According to the NFL’s code of personal conduct, all individuals associated with the league are expected to avoid any actions that could harm the integrity and public perception of the NFL. This includes owners, coaches, players, team staff, game officials, and employees of the league office, NFL Films, NFL Network, or any other NFL-related organizations.
Although it is technically feasible to dismiss an NFL owner, there has never been a recorded instance of an owner being removed in the league’s entire existence.
