The WRAL HighSchoolOT Wrestling Invitational has declared New Bern the winner of the boys’ title, with Ryan Mann being named the top wrestler.


The boys wrestling team from New Bern emerged victorious at the WRAL HighSchoolOT Invitational held at Knightdale High School on Saturday.

The Bears did not have a single winner in the competition, but they had multiple wrestlers earn placements.

Vincent Grist, representing New Bern, was the highest-ranking wrestler in the 215-pound weight division. Despite his strong performance, Grist ultimately lost to Kiyon Brown from Athens Drive by a score of 11-5 in the final round.

Grist had two losses in the competition but managed to defeat Geronimo Oxendine from Hoke County with a score of 9-7, earning a spot in the final round.

At the 113-pound weight class, Alex Barnett of New Bern earned a third place finish. In the third place match, Barnett pinned Bryce Perry from Washington at the 3:21 mark.

Additional New Bern wrestlers who received recognition were Landon Fox (4th place in the 106-pound division), Nick Lewis (5th place in the 132-pound division), Tyler Klemmer (7th place in the 138-pound division), and Jeremiah Lambert (4th place in the 165-pound division).

Pinecrest placed second overall as a team, thanks to two first-place victories. Ethan Finn claimed the 126-pound championship with a 9-3 win against Brayden Holmes from Rosewood. Cooper Ogden also secured the top spot in the 165-pound weight division after Green Level’s Symon Sadler had to forfeit due to a medical issue.

The top five teams in the standings were Hoke County, Green Hope, and Rosewood.

Ryan Mann, a junior at North East Carolina Prep, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament. Despite being undefeated this season, Mann faced a tough opponent in Tobin McNair from Wakefield, with a record of 31-2. In the end, Mann emerged victorious in the 138-pound weight class with a 4-0 decision.

Mann has a flawless record of 31 wins and 0 losses this season. He successfully pinned his first two opponents in the competition, followed by securing victories of 4-2 and 9-4 to secure a spot in the championship round.
