Cleveland’s Omarion Hampton picked in NFL Draft
One of the most prolific rushers in North Carolina high school football history heard his name called in the NFL Draft on Thursday.
Cleveland High School alum Omarion Hampton was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the 22nd pick in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Hampton rushed for 5,369 yards and 88 touchdowns during his four-year career, which includes a pandemic-shortened season during the 2020-2021 school year where he only played five games. He also recorded 503 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, finishing his career with 98 total tocuhdowns (including one kick return and one punt return for a touchdown).
The highest rushing total of Hampton’s high school career came during his sophomore season when recorded 2,402 yards and 35 touchdowns on 250 carries. However, as a senior he averaged 12.1 yards per carry, posting 1,948 yards on 161 carries, including 39 touchdowns.
Hampton was named the HighSchoolOT All-State Team, was the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year, and was selected to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas roster.
Before his senior season, Hampton committed to the University of North Carolina. He was rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports.com, which rated him the No. 11 running back in the country from the Class of 2022.
Hampton played three seasons for the Tar Heels. As a junior this past fall, he led the team in rushing touchdowns with 15, and was the third in rushing yards across the FBS with 1,660 yards on 281 carries.
This past fall, Cleveland broughton Hampton back home to Johnston County to retire his high school jersey.
