South Granville erupts for 17-run performance at Southern Alamance
MT. HERMON, N.C. – South Granville’s red-hot bats kept swinging to the tune of an 11th straight victory.
Seven runs in the second and 10 in the fifth sent the Vikings past Southern Alamance 17-5 via run-rule. They will play Hickory Ridge on Saturday in the Southern Alamance Easter Invitational winners’ bracket.
Chaleigh Currin was at the center of it all. The Barton commit hit a grand slam in the second, followed by a three-run home run in the fifth. She, Avery Wilson, and Madeline Wilkins combined to go 8-for-12 with 13 RBI and six runs scored out of the top three spots in the lineup.
Currin also threw five innings in the circle with six strikeouts.
With one out in the top of the second inning, the Vikings singled three consecutive times to load the bases.
Three straight bases-loaded walks followed, and when Southern Alamance went to the bullpen, Currin instantly greeted Ella Smith with a grand slam to left.
Addisen Goodwin added a run in the third when she singled home Kala Cannady.
Trailing 8-0, the Patriots broke through in the bottom half of the frame.
The first four batters for Southern Alamance reached base. Gracie Shoffner followed an Avery Dobbins RBI single with a two-run double to right to slash the deficit to 8-3.
Sydney Hockaday, Wilson, and Wilkins crushed back-to-back-to-back run-scoring hits in the fifth. That set the table for Currin’s second big fly of the day to inflate the lead to 15-3.
Wilson would drive in another later in the frame to close out the 17-run outburst.
Southern Alamance scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, but the damage was limited to that, thanks to a diving catch in center by Wilkins that started a game-ending double play.
South Granville is now 12-2 overall. Southern Alamance dropped to 9-10 with the loss.
