No. 13 D.H. Conley leans on the long ball in win over Ayden-Grifton
HOLLYWOOD CROSSROADS, N.C. – D.H. Conley’s Saturday doubleheader opened with the Vikings’ 11th consecutive victory.
Lena Zurface and Kendall Howard homered in a 5-3 victory over Ayden-Grifton.
Zurface set the tone for Conley, snagging an inning-ending line drive at third to end a bases-loaded jam in the first, then going deep with one out in the second.
Playing as the home team, the Chargers ensured their early deficit was short-lived.
Kenlie Guthrie and KG Olejar reached base to start the bottom of the second. Guthrie’s courtesy runner Juliyanne Beaman scored on a ground out, and Olejar crossed a batter later on a wild pitch.
Trailing 2-1 in the third, Ava Gaddis brought home Reagan Stocks on a fly ball that dropped into left. The next batter was Howard, who deposited a three-run shot over the wall in left center.
After Cheyenne Forbes made it a 5-3 game in the fifth, D.H. Conley called upon Howard to slam the door in relief.
She did just that, relieving Monica Jones with 2.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out six.
The Vikings are 13-3 overall and play South Lenoir at 5:00 PM. Ayden-Grifton (8-11) turns around to face West Johnston at 3:00 PM.
