No. 11 Corinth Holders rides Briggs McKenzie’s no-hit effort to big win over No. 20 Southwest Guilford

MYRTLE GROVE, N.C. – Monday evening was another day at the office for Corinth Holders lefty Briggs McKenzie.

It was also another day at the office for the more than two dozen area scouts who have followed him throughout his masterful senior campaign.

The LSU recruit tossed a five-inning no-hitter against No. 20 Southwest Guilford. He faced the minimum and struck out a dozen to secure a 10-0 victory for the No. 11 ranked Pirates.

McKenzie’s lone blemish came against the game’s first batter. Devin Hernandez worked a full count and drew a lead-off walk, only to be instantly picked off first base.

Seven of the next eight batters went on to strike out. In a lineup that has averaged over six runs a game this season, the Cowboys’ 4-5-6 hitters went 0-for-6 with six K’s.

Corinth Holders managed only one run-scoring hit in the run-rule victory.

After loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, the Pirates took advantage of two hit batsmen, a balk, and a wild pitch to grab a 3-0 lead. McKenzie followed with a drive to center that, despite being caught, was deep enough to plate two via sacrifice fly.

Conner Dunlop tripled and scored twice in the game. A sacrifice fly allowed him to turn his first three-bagger into a third-inning run. He extended the lead to 7-0 when he crossed on Tripp Johnson’s fifth-inning single to center.

Four came home in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. After Dunlop scored, a wild pitch extended the advantage to 8-0. With the bases loaded and two down, McKenzie lofted another fly ball to center; this time, it was dropped, allowing two to score for the 10-0 win.

47 of McKenzie’s 64 pitches went for strikes. The Pirates have won 10 straight games and are now 16-2 overall. On Tuesday night, they venture over to Legion Stadium in Wilmington to take on New Hanover before ending their Wilmington Baseball Classic journey on Wednesday afternoon at Hoggard against Eastern Alamance.

Southwest Guilford fell to 13-5 overall. The Cowboys face Union Pines on Tuesday morning at Legion Stadium and First Colonial (VA) on Wednesday morning at Hoggard.
