Bryson DeChambeau called his blast from the 18th bunker on Pinehurst No. 2 the “shot of his life” after winning the 2024 US Open. That shot now holds a forever place in Pinehurst lore.

“Well, I don’t get a statue,” DeChambeau joked, referring to his idol Payne Stewart’s statue on 18.

The statue is typically positioned at hole No. 18 at Pinehurst No. 2. It will return to its regular location after the 2024 U.S. Open.

The USGA and Pinehurst Resort and Country Club unveiled a commemorative plaque next to the 18th hole greenside on Course No. 2 Monday, marking the spot where DeChambeau’s clutch bunker shot secured his 2024 championship. DeChambeau is the first golfer to receive his own plaque at Pinehurst No. 2.

“I can’t believe it to be honest,” he said. “The USGA doing this for me is an incredible honor, one that hopefully will inspire many in the future.”

DeChambeau was in town less than 24 hours after the tables were turned on him at the 2025 Masters. DeChambeau who benefitted from Rory McIlroy’s three bogeys on the final four holes at Pinehurst, was paired with McIlroy for Sunday’s final round in Augusta. DeChambeau briefly took a share of the lead after McIlroy double bogeyed the first hole, but was unable to repeat his 2024 US Open magic. DeChambeau finished tied for 5th, his best finish at the Masters.

After DeChambeau’s 2024 victory he yelled, “That’s Payne right there baby!” in reference to the late Stewart’s iconic 15-foot par putt to defeat Phil Mickelson at the 1999 US Open. DeChambeau’s plaque joins Stewart’s bronze statue on 18.

“Why me? Why was it me? I may never know, but I’m certainly honored to be a part of history. The shot of my life,” DeChambeau said.

“That darn bunker!”
