On3, 247Sports, and Rivals have Waddell rated as a 3-star prospect. 247 ranks Waddell as the 34th rising senior prospect in North Carolina. On3 has him No. 36. Rivals doesn’t have him in a state ranking. His commitment came as a surprise as he never announced a top schools list. Waddell earned offers from a few Power 4 universities, including Louisvlle, but the biggest schools in-state never made an offer. Appalachian State, East Carolina Campbell, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, and UNC-Charlotte tired for his services.

• 2022-23 football season: As a freshman, Waddell was down on Rolesville’s JV team.
• 2023-24 football season: Waddell was moved to the varsity team for his sophomore year. He was a breakout player for Rolesville and helped the Rams to a 12-2 overall record and fourth round playoff appearance. The Rams were knocked out by Cardinal Gibbons. Waddell finished the season with 66 receptions for 1,005 yards and nine touchdowns.
