Ranking the 5 best matchups at this weekend’s The Brittany Showcase

The Brittany Showcase, hosted at Wilson’s Gillette Soccer Complex, annually features some of the best girls soccer teams from across the state.

It’s named after Brittany Willis, who played soccer at Hunt and was the victim of random violence and murdered shortly after her graduation in 2004.

Each year, teams are told the story of Brittany and her impact, as well as what to watch for to protect themselves. Teams can also donate to the Brittany Scholarship.

Each team, the best teams and players from all over North Carolina flock to Wilson to participate in The Brittany.

Games start at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and go through 4 p.m. start times on Saturday. If you’re going, here are five games to keep an eye on.

#5: Hickory vs Manteo (11:40 a.m. Saturday, Field 6)

The Red Tornadoes are looking like a 3A title contender, and Manteo is consistently among the best in the 2A East. Anytime you can pair an Outer Banks team with one from the Catawba Valley, it’s pretty neat.

#4: Heritage vs Marvin Ridge (1:50 p.m. Saturday, Field 2)

Coming off a 4A title last year, Marvin Ridge is ranked fourth in the state entering this week while Heritage is just outside the top 25. The Huskies are consistently one of the Triangle’s best programs. A win here goes a long way.

#3: Cardinal Gibbons vs Charlotte Catholic (Friday, 5:30 p.m., Field 4)

A top-25 matchup between the state’s two largest Catholic schools never disappoints. Gibbons entered the week ranked seventh in the HighSchoolOT Top 25, while Catholic is 24th.

Both are teams that, no matter where they’re seeded, are threats to go deep in the 4A playoffs.

#2: T.C. Roberson vs Ashley (11:40 a.m. Saturday, Field 2)

The mountains meet the coast in a matchup of two top-20 teams. Ashley is ranked second, while Roberson is 20th.

Ashley has made the last two 4A finals but come up short in both. With a few early graduations, the Screaming Eagles are trying to prove they still belong in the title talk conversation.

#1: Marvin Ridge vs Millbrook (7:30 p.m. Friday, Field 4)

Yes, we put the reigning 4A champs on here twice, but that seems reasonable.

Millbrook is ranked 10th this week. If the Wildcats are for real this year, this is an easy way to prove it.

Millbrook’s Saturday matchup against Ardrey Kell is another great showdown that just missed the cut.
