As trade deadline looms, Rantanen’s status with Canes a hot topic :: WRALSportsFan.com

The most talked-about Carolina Hurricanes storyline as the trade deadline nears is speculation that they could swap a multi-time all-star they acquired just weeks ago.

Weeks after he highlighted a blockbuster trade between the Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche, Mikko Rantanen has two goals and four assists in 12 games played. The 28-year-old is an unrestricted free agent who could leave after the season, much like Jake Guentzel departed for Tampa Bay after being part of a playoff push in 2024.

NHL reporters and media members have speculated where Rantanen could end up, with some questioning his fit in Carolina. Rantanen won a Stanley Cup in Colorado in 2022 and had 25 goals in 49 games with Colorado to start the season. Since the late January trade, Rantanen only has six points, prompting rumors about his availability in the trade market.

Rantanen was a participant during Thursday’s morning skate ahead of a home game against Boston. He declined to speak to the media afterwards.

It’s a storyline that’s overtaken another playoff push, as the team looks to cement a spot in the postseason for the seventh straight year. With 19 games left, Carolina (36-22-4) stands at second place in the Metropolitan Division with 76 points. Although they haven’t gotten the desired production from Rantanen, Consecutive wins against Calgary and Detroit have bolstered the Hurricanes’ standing.

“I try not to watch too much,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I know everyone is talking about it, but he’s here, he was here this morning and I’m assuming he’ll be here tonight.”

The trade deadline is Friday at 3 p.m. ET.

Thursday night’s game starts at 7 p.m. and will be simulcast on WRAL-TV.
