Extra Effort Award: Jack Britt’s Makani Morris plays big, lives bigger
There are multitudes to Jack Britt senior Makani Morris.
You can catch him with a cello in hand, practicing ahead of a performance.
“Probably not a good time to say I have stage fright,” he laughed.
For someone with stage fright, he sure plays well.
“I’m three year all-county cellist. This year I earned second chair, first chair was really good honestly, I wasn’t going to beat her.”
Catch Morris a few minutes later on the way to the Jack Britt weight room, a place he spent a lot of time over the past four years as a starting offensive lineman. He’s not the biggest guard you’ll see on a football team, but there’s a lot more to this team captain than meets the eye.
“There’s a little more size within within his heart and his mind than just the physical attributes he has,” Jack Britt head football coach Brian Randolph said.
During his time with the Buccaneers, he’s participated in wrestling, swimming and baseball, all while becoming an Eagle Scout too.
“If you chase it, you have the chance to be whatever you want coming to Jack Britt,” Morris said.
Throw in a job and a GPA over 4.0, he’s always showing Extra Effort. What matters more to him than anything, is building up the world around him, brick by brick.
“I think as a team captain and as somebody who people look up to, that really helped this year, understanding how to build relationships and how to communicate effectively with other people,” Morris said.
He’s made Jack Britt all the better for it.
“He’s a stand up guy, he does what’s best for the team and the people around him, he’s somebody you want in the program because he will make your program better and that’s what we look at, can this guy make us better as a program, and Makani Morris hits all those,” Randolph said.
And that’s why Makani Morris is this week’s winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
