Belichick, UNC continue to reshape football roster with 19 new signees :: WRALSportsFan.com

North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick added 19 players to the program, continuing to remake the Tar Heels’ roster in his first weeks on the job.

The school announced the signing of 17 freshman and two transfers. UNC has now added 46 players in the offseason. All but six have joined since Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots, was named head coach on Dec. 11.

Football rosters are expected to be capped at 105 players in 2025 as part of the NCAA’s settlement of several lawsuits. More roster changes are likely when the transfer portal opens again in mid-April.

The most recent additions include quarterback Gary Merrill, a 6-foot-1 high schooler out of New York who had more than 3,000 yards rushing and passing in two seasons at St. Anthony’s. Merrill had committed to play lacrosse at UNC. He is a top-ranked lacrosse recruit.

UNC also signed quarterback Au’Tori Newkirk out of Virginia. Newkirk (5-3, 200) was the player of the year in 2023 and 2024 in his classification. He led his team to back-to-back state titles, including a 15-0 record in 2024.

Offensive lineman Daniel King (Troy) and kicker Jaffer Murphy (Division II Lake Erie) are transfers.

The Tar Heels announced seven signees on Dec. 4 before Belichick was hired. Defensive lineman Kamden Laudenslager has since announced he would not attend UNC.

Days after being hired, Belichick secured a commitment from in-state quarterback Bryce Baker. The Tar Heels announced 21 additions to the roster, including Baker, on Jan. 22.

UNC has yet to announce members of Belichick’s coaching staff outside of holdover Freddie Kitchens, though several coaches have been hired.
